Pinyon Pine (Pinus edulis)
The seeds grow under the scales of the cones--sometimes 1, sometimes 2 per scale. They
are edible and very nutritious. The wood is excellent to start a campfire, but burns
quickly. The leaves grow in groups of 2 per cluster (at the end of new twigs, the needles
look like 1 per cluster, but in reality there are 2, which are united but become separated
later).
