Single-Leaf Pinyon Pine (Pinus monophylla)

Its seeds, which grow in thin shells, are edible; its trunk--usually--is not tall or strong
enough to be used for lumber; however, it can be used to make furniture and hunting
utensils; both trunk and branches are excellent wood for campfires. It has a broad
lateral root system, whose thin branches tend to reach deep underground.

Sometimes, one can find hybrids of Colorado pinyon (Pinus edulis) and Single-Leaf.
Edulis is a similar tree; however, it has 2 needles per cluster, instead of one. Its seeds
are a little larger, and edible as well. It has shallow lateral roots, but its central root
(taproot) grows deep underground.

Both species can endure harsh dry climate and soil conditions; therefore, are often
found in rocky or sandy environments.
