American Bistort (Polygonum bistortoides)
The roots are edible either raw or cooked. The seeds can be dried, ground, and used as flour. They
can also be roasted and eaten. The young leaves may be eaten raw, but they are best when cooked.
Cooking them will eliminate their tendency to produce mineral deficiency. It is helpful if included in
diets to fight fevers, tetanus, cysts, diabetes, hemorrhoids, and cramps. It is an astringent (good
against diarrhea). A tea made of this plant can make a good gargle and mouth wash. It can help to
improve pus-filled ulcers, and to heal wounds. It helps to eliminate intestinal worms. It has antioxidant
properties. I can be used as an anti-inflammatory. It can also be used to alleviate poison-related
conditions. People with digestive system problems, kidney stones, gout, or arthritis, should avoid this plant.
