Cholla (Opuntia imbricate)

It is very rich in calcium. The high content of soluble fiber in the fruit helps
regulate the sugar levels in the body. It, therefore, can be used to fight
illnesses such as diabetes and osteoporosis. The yellow fruit can be eaten
raw or cooked. The fleshy part of the stems can be boiled and eaten. A tea
can also be made with them, mixed with honey and a hint of olive oil. Peeled
and dry stems are used to make walking sticks. The thorns can be used as
needles for sewing or as fishing hooks.
