Moss Campion (Silene acaulis)
It is edible--can be consumed raw, but it is advisable to boil it first. The flowers
are usually pinkish; however, they can also be white, like the ones in this picture.
The word "Campion" comes from the Latin word "campio (campio, onis)." It means
champion. This plant was given its name because for centuries someone who won
a victory in the field (Latin "campus")--battlefield, games field, or gladiators arena,
was crown with a wreath which had its flowers embedded all around it.
As with all tundra plants, please do not consume unless you are in a real survival
situation.
