Scouring Rush (Equisetum hyemale)

The adjective "scouring" refers to the fact that its stems have been and are used to scour
cooking utensils, and as sandpaper--it is high on silica. A tea made with the stems can be
used for medicinal purposes as a diuretic. It is a plant that reproduces mostly by spores,
which are contained within the strobilus (the dark cone-shaped end of the stem, in the
picture). The photosynthesis takes place mostly in the stem.
