Woodland Strawberry (Fragaria vesca)
The entire plant is edible, with astringent and diuretic properties. Some people have
used it externally to sooth sunburn; however, while it generally brings relief, at times,
it has worsened the situation. Our advice: use it on a small portion of the affected skin;
wait for about half an hour; if it works, proceed; otherwise, don't.
Identification and differentiation tips: leaves are glossy and their veins are prominent;
also, the tooth that aligns with the end of the midrib is larger than, or about the same
as, the 2 surrounding teeth; strawberries are bigger than virginiana's, they don't have
cavities, and the seeds are on the surface.
Duchesnea (better classified as Potentilla) indica, is also known as Mock or Indian
Strawberry; however, its flowers are yellow, the strawberries grow upright, and very
much tasteless--even though, edible.
